Google's new boss Sundar Pichai : A man of Dedication and innovation

The moment Google announced  that it would be subsumed within a new parent company called Alphabet a very big spotlight suddenly shone on Sundar Pichai, the executive who will replace Larry Page as Google’s CEO at the same time it was a moment of pride for Indians back home because the company’s head of Products and Engineering, Chennai-born Pichai Sundararajan, was appointed the CEO of the new, “slimmed down” Google.

Pichai will oversee the biggest company under that umbrella, which will still be called Google and will continue to include some of Google's best-known products, including its search engine, ads, maps, apps, YouTube and Android system.

"Journey that was not so easy" from IIT Kharagpur to Google

  • Born in 1972, Pichai grew up in Chennai upbringing of Sundar Pichai was very humble as he was from low middle class family. Pichai's family lived in a two room apartment. Pichai didn't have a room he slept on the living room floor, as did his younger brother. His family was not owning a television, or a car
  • Pichai did all his schooling in the city he earned his degree from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT ) in Metallurgical Engineering.Sundar was recommended by his Professors at IIT to pursue PhD at Stanford University. 
  • Pichai decided to pursure M.S and MBA instead fortunately Pichai was offered a scholarship at the ultimate breeding ground of tech geniuses Stanford University.The plane ticket to America cost more than his Dad's annual salary.
  • He holds an M.S. from Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering and an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania where he was named a Siebel Scholar and a Palmer Scholar.
  • Although Mr. Pichai was trained in metallurgy and materials science at IIT Kharagpur, and Stanford and did an MBA at Wharton, he was already deeply immersed in the world of electronics.
  • According to one of his college professors Mr. Pichai “was doing work in the field of electronics at a time when no separate course on electronics existed in our curriculum.”
  • Above everything Sundar Pichai combines a deep passion for engineering excellence with a rare managerial quality of attracting the best talent into the teams he works with
  • Before his first job at Google, Pichai worked at Applied Materials as an engineer and then at McKinsey & Company in management consulting.

Career at Google

  • Sundar Pichai joined Google  in 2004, where he was known as a “low-key manager” who worked on the Google toolbar later he led the team working on Google's Chrome browser and operating system
  • Gradually Pichai began to receive more responsibility, as he was involved with various Google search products including Firefox, Google Toolbar, Desktop Search, Gadgets, and Google Gears and Gadgets
  • Dedication and innovation of Sundar Pichai brought fruits and he started rising through the ranks of Google and  soon he became Vice President, then Senior Vice President, and ultimately was charged with supervising all Google apps including Gmail and Google Drive and finally given control of Android itself
  • He was promoted to the post of  Product Chief in October 2014 which  literally made him Mr. Page’s second-in-command  who monitored day-to-day operations for all of Google's major products including maps, search, and advertising.

Pride for India

  • The elevation of Sundar Pichai as the CEO of Google is milestone for Indian-origin CEOs, of whom there are at least half dozen in Fortune 500 companies, including Indra Nooyi at Pepsi, Ajay Banga at Mastercard, and Sanjay Mehrotra at SanDisk.
  • It should be noted that  two of the world's five largest companies by marketcap are headed by executives of Indian-origin  Sundar Pichai at Google which is ranked #4, and Microsoft, which is ranked # 5, is helmed by Satya Nadella
