Lin Dan and Ratchanok crowned World Badminton Champion

Wang Lao Ji BWF World Championships 2013 concluded here in Guangzhou, China with local Badminton Star “ Lin Dan” becoming the first man to win five world badminton championship singles titles following his win over current World Number 1 Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei in the finals. Lin Dan , nicknamed SuperDan, is considered the best player in the history of the sport.

  • He also became first ever wild card entrant to win world championship (he got a wild card entry to tournament due to his one year break from the competitive sport owing to injuries and personal commitments. Due to this he could play only one tournament before the world champion)

This was also China's sixth consecutive win over men's singles Title in World Championship.

Women’s singles : Thailand’s 18-year-old Ratchanok Intanon became the youngest winner of the women’s singles event as she defeated World No. 1 and Olympic gold medallist, Li Xuerui of China.

  • her first badminton world championship title
  • was the youngest-ever junior world champion at the age of 14 and won the world junior title for a record three times
  • first Thai to win the world championship and first non-Chinese woman since Denmark's Camilla Martin win in 1999 (Denmark World Championship)

Her win comes at a time when Thai Badminton is facing embarrasment over banning of Maneepong Jongjit and Bodin Issara from the game following their brawl in the final of the Canadian Open.

Women's doubles title - Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang (China) defeated Jang Ye-na and Eom Hye-won (South Korea).

  • Yu Yang became the only player to win three successive Women’s Doubles titles at the world championships
  • ** Wang Xiaoli and Yu Yang – were suspended from London Olympics due to “ play-to-lose scandal” (deliberately lost match to setup clash against a particular opponent)

Mixed doubles- Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir (Indonesia) defeated Chen Xu and Jin Ma (China)

Men's doubles title - Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan (Indonesia) defeated Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen (Denmark)

China and Indonesia : 2 titles each 

P V Sindhu shines

Earlier P V Sindhu of India created history when she won the Bronze Medal in the Women’s singles event after losing in the semifinal of the world's biggest badminton tournament to world no. 3 Ratchanok Inthanon (the eventual winner).

  • This was her first World Championship
  • She became only the 2nd Indian Single’s player to win Bronze/ reach semifinal in the World Championship (she defeated defending champion and world No. 5 Yihan Wang and then Shixian Wang).
  • Prakash Padukone - The only other Indian singles player to have entered the semis of the Worlds (won the bronze in Copenhagen in 1983). Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponappa won a doubles bronze at World Championship in London 2011.

  • The most prestigious tournament in Badminton and confer winners the title of “World Champion”
  • 5 events : Men’s singles, Women’s singles, Men’s and Women’s doubles and Mixed doubles
  • First held in 1977 (held every two years since then till 2003). From 2003 held every year except Olympic years
  • Wang Lao Ji BWF World Championships 2013 : China hosted the event once in 1987 in Beijing ; 2013 edition is being held in in Guangzhou (TianHe Indoor Gymnasium)
