  • FDI Prohibited in manufacturing of tobacco : RBI
    • As per Reserve Bank Of India Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in manufacturing of tobacoo products is prohibited.
    • Foreign direct investment (FDI) is prohibited in manufacturing of products from tobacco or from tobacco substitutes such as cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes 
    • Foreign direct investment in other activities relating to these tobacco products  shall be governed by the sectoral restrictions laid down in the FDI policy
    • The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, under the Commerce Ministry has framed these guidelines on sectoral restriction 
  • Nationwide Mobile Number Portability becomes operational
    • Nationwide Mobile Number Portability (MNP) has became operational from 3rd July 2015.
    • Mobile Number Portability allows customers to keep their existing mobile phone numbers while shifting between states and circles
    • Prior to the introduction of Nationwide Mobile Number Portability (MNP) customers could change their operator while retaining the same number only in the same state or telecom circle.
    • In order to avail the new facility of mobile number portability (MNP) the subscribers will have to visit a store of their telecom operator or call the customer care number concerned.
    • Bharti Airtel becomes the first Indian telecom operator to offer nationwide mobile number portability (MNP) after the government ordered all operators to introduce full MNP.
  • BSNL launches mobile wallet service ‘Speed Pay’

    BSNL has  launched a pre-paid card linked mobile wallet service which would allow its customers :-

    1. Transfer money
    2. Pay for services 
    3. Withdraw cash of up to Rs. 1 lakh

    What are the features of BSNL ‘Speed Pay’ :-

    1. The wallet service, Speed Pay, allows a customer to load money even if he does not have a bank account
    2. Through BSNL Speed pay even customers who don't have bank accounts can also load money at any BSNL retail outlet and ask the retailer to recharge their mobile wallet account and pay for various services
    3. The money loaded in the mobile wallet can be transferred to a bank account and even withdrawn at bank branches or at BSNL outlets
    4. BSNL Speed Pay card service will be available in Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu by the end of September

     BSNL Buzz :-

    1. BSNL also launched entertainment service BSNL Buzz in partnership with Celltick
    2. BSNL customer using the feature on smartphone can subscribe to various contents like news, jokes, contest etc for Rs. 10 per month. 
    3. BSNL Buzz also deliver location based information services in seven languages- Hindi, English, Bengali, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and Telugu.
  • U.S. wins Women's FIFA World Cup 2015 beating Japan by 5-2
    • U.S. defeated Japan, 5-2, to win women's fifa world cup 2015  for the first time since 1999, FIFA Women's World Cup 2015 final was played between U.S and Japan  at Vancouver, British Columbia.
    • The USA is the only country to ever win three Women's fifa World Cup titles, prior to this  United States was also winner  in 1991 and 1999

  • Madhya Pradesh creates world Records in Washing Hands
    • The Guinness Book of World Records has recognised a record created in Madhya Pradesh on 'World Hand washing Day' on October 15, 2014.
    • On October 15, 2014 i.e on World Hand Washing Day 12,76,425 students created a new world record by washing their hands simultaneously at programmes held by panchayats and rural development departments  at 13,196 different locations across 51 districts in Madhya Pradesh.
    • Prior to this record was held jointly by Argentina, Peru and Mexico earlier after 7,40,870 people washed their hands simultaneously at different locations on October 14, 2011
    • Madhya Pradesh is the only state, which has surpassed the joint record of these three countries on October 15, 2014
  • Renowned Pakistani Urdu novelist Abdullah Hussain passes away

    Eminent Urdu novelist Abdullah Hussain passed away at the age of 84 as he was suffering from blood cancer for the past one year. Abdullah Hussain was renowned for his Urdu novel Udas Naslein, which is considered a masterpiece of Urdu literature. He will be remembered for his other famous novels :-

    1. Baagh, 
    2. Nadaar Loag 
    3. Short stories Faraib and Nashaib
  • Renowned US actress Diana Douglas passes away
    • Renowned actress and mother of Oscar winning Michael Douglas "Diana Douglas" died at the age of 92, fighting against cancer
    • Diana Douglas was born as Diana Love Dill on 22 January, 1923 in Devonshire, Bermuda.  she studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where she met Kirk.
    • She was married to the legendary actor  Kirk Douglas from 1943 until their divorce in 1951. She had two sons, Michael and Joel, with Kirk.
    • Diana Douglas started her career as an actress in 1942 with Warner Bros Studios and had appeared in more than 50 films since then. She had modelled on the cover of Life Magazine in 1943.
    • Diana has appeared in dozens of films and TV shows including "Planes, Trains and Automobiles", "ER" and "The West Wing"
    • She appeared with her ex-husband and elder son in the 2003 film "It Runs in the Family" the film that marked her final big screen appearance
  • India retains South Asian Basketball Championship
    •  India defeated Sri Lanka by  93-44 to retain the South Asian Basketball Championship (SABA) which is being played at Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru
    •  With the win, India also qualified for the FIBA Asia Championship in China in September.
    •  India bagged the gold medal while Sri Lanka and Nepal finished second and third respectively
    •  The winning team was given a cash prize of Rs 35,000 as a personal gesture of Basketball Federation of India (BFI) President K Govindraj. 
    •  Trophies and medals were handed out to the top three teams of India (gold), Sri Lanka (silver) and Nepal (bronze)
  • Unwed mother can be child’s guardian without father’s consent : landmark judgement by supreme court
    • Supreme Court has passed an order that an unwed mother could be appointed as the sole legal guardian of her child, without taking consent from the father.
    • The court also said that it was not required of the unwed mother to unveil the identity of the father.The apex court order came after a woman government officer filed a petition questioning the necessity of involving the father who had not married her.
    • The petitioner contented that the father of the child had barely stayed two months with her and had done nothing for the upbringing of the child.She has also asserted her right not to disclose the parentage as disclosure would create more problems for both parents. 

    What was the rule that was followed prior to this Judgement?

    • Hindu Minority and Guardianship Act, which requires marriage necessary for a parent to apply for legal guardianship of a child.
    • According to the act, it is also necessary for a unwed woman to seek permission from the man before applying for guardianship of the child.
