  • India’s first Mr Universe Manohar Aich passes away  

    Legendary Indian body builder and the country's first Mr Universe Manohar Aich died on Sunday at his north Kolkata residence following age related health issues. He was 104. Manohar Aich had won the Mr. Universe title in 1952 and was nicknamed ‘Pocket Hercules’ due to his 4-feet, 11-inch frame.

    Facts about Manohar Aich :

    India’s first Mr Universe Manohar Aich passes awayHe was born on 17 March 1912  in Comilla in the Tipperah District of Bengal (now the Comilla District in Bangladesh). He joined the Royal Air Force in 1942 where he began his pursuit in bodybuilding. 

    While part of the RAF, he was imprisoned for slapping a British officer, in protest at the officer's remarks in favour of colonial oppression.

    In 1950, at the age of 38, Aich won the Mr. Hercules contest. In 1951 he stood second in the Mr. Universe contest. In 1952 he won  the Pro-Short division of the NABBA Mr. Universe.

    In 1991, he unsuccessfully contested the Lok Sabha elections as a BJP candidate. He had finished third, collecting over 1.63 lakh votes.

  • PM Narendra Modi conferred with the Highest Civilian Honour of Afghanistan

    PM Narendra Modi conferred with the Highest Civilian Honour of AfghanistanThe Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has been conferred with Amir Amanullah Khan Award, Afghanistan’s highest civilian honour.

    He was bestowed the honour by President Ashraf Ghani after the inauguration of the landmark Afghan-India Friendship Dam in Herat, Afghanistan.

    Amir Amanullah Khan Award :

    Amir Amanullah Khan Award is the highest Civilian honour bestowed by Afghan government to Afghan national as well as foreigners in appreciation of their services. 

    The award is named after Afghan national hero Amanullah Khan who championed the cause of Afghanistan’s freedom.The citation on the reverse of the medal reads: “nishan-e dawlati Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan”, or "State Order of Ghazi Amir Amanullah Khan.” 

    Facts to know about Amanullah Khan 

    PM Narendra Modi conferred with the Highest Civilian Honour of AfghanistanAmanullah Khan born on June 1, 1892 was the sovereign of the Kingdom of Afghanistan from 1919 to 1929, first as Emir and after 1926 as Malik (King).

    After the third Anglo-Afghan War, Afghanistan was able to pursue an independent foreign policy free from the influence of the United Kingdom, and his rule was marked by dramatic political and social change

    He was the first Afghan ruler who attempted to modernize Afghanistan on Western designs. However, he did not succeed in this because of a popular uprising by Habibullah Kalakani and his followers.

    In 1929, Amanullah abdicated from throne and fled to neighbouring British India while Afghanistan fell into a civil war. From British India he went to Europe where he died in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1960.

  • V Narayanasamy sworn in as Puducherry CM

    Former Union Minister of State and AICC general secretary V. Narayanasamy was sworn in as Chief Minister of the Union Territory of Puducherry.

    It should be noted that currently Narayanasamy is not a member of the house. He need to become member of house by facing election in 6 months.

    Lieutenant Governor Kiran Bedi administered the oath of office and secrecy to Mr. Narayanasamy and the five Ministers – A. Namassivayam, Malladi Krishna Rao, M. Candassamy, M.O.H. F. Shahjahan and R. Kamalakannan.

    Facts about V Narayanasamy :

    V Narayanasamy sworn in as Puducherry CMV. Narayanasamy born 30 May 1947 in  Pondicherry has served three tenure as Rajya Sabha MP and was member of Lok Sabha from Puducherry constituency from 2009 to 2014.

    He had served as Minister of State (MoS) Parliamentary Affairs in UPA-I. In 2009, he was elected to Lok Sabha and had served as Minister of State (MoS) in Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) in UPA II.

    Note : In the recently held state general elections Congress-DMK alliance had emerged victorious by securing  17 seats (Congress: 15; DMK:2) in the 30 member assembly.

  • World’s first 3D printed plane THOR unveiled by Airbus

    Thor- the world’s first 3D-printed aircraft was unveiled by European aerospace company, Airbus at the International Aerospace Exhibition held in Schoenefeld, Germany.

    The aircraft is windowless, weighing in at just 21 kilos (46 pounds) and less than four metres (13 feet) long.  Thor is short term for  "Test of High-tech Objectives in Reality". It resembles a large, white model airplane.

    Key features of THOR 

    World’s first 3D printed plane THOR unveiled by AirbusTHOR has just 3 parts. It is lighter, faster and cheaper. It is windowless small pilotless propeller aircraft. It weighs 21 kilo grams and less than 4 metres. All of it's parts except the electrical elements  are 3D printed from a substance called polyamide.

    Airbus and its US rival Boeing are already using 3D printing, notably to make parts for their huge passenger jets the A350 and B787 Dreamliner.

    The printed pieces have the advantage of requiring no tools and that they can be made very quickly. The metal parts produced can also be 30-50 percent lighter than in the past, and there is almost zero manufacturing waste.

    About 3D printing technology 

    3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing (AM) is a process of making 3-D (three dimensional) solid objects from a digital file with extreme precision.

    In 3D printing, successive layers of material are formed under computer control to create an object. These objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and are produced from a 3D model or other electronic data source. A 3D printer is a type of industrial robot.

  • India ranks 70th on Good Country Index

    India ranks 70th on Good Country IndexIndia is the world's 70th good country to live in amongst 163 other nations, according to recently released 2015 Good Country Index (GCI).

    Sweden has been voted as the best country in the world when it comes to serving the interests of its people and contributing to the common good of humanity.

    Top 10 Countries in 2015 GCI: The top ten best countries included Sweden, Denmark, the Netherlands, the UK, Germany, Finland, Canada, France, Austria and New Zealand whereas Libya was ranked as the least "good" country in the world.

    Indian Scenario

    India figured at 70th position overall, three places below China. India’s best ranking (27th) was in ‘international peace and security’ parameter of index and was the worst (124th) in ‘prosperity and equality’. 

    India stood at 37th position in health and wellbeing and 62nd in science and technology. It was placed at 119th position in culture, 106th position in climate and 100th position in world order.

  • Pakistani Sindhi Hindus to get Indian citizenship

    Pakistani Sindhi Hindus to get Indian citizenshipThe Centre will set up a four-day camp from June 12-15 in Indore, Madhya Pradesh to grant Indian citizenship to the Sindhi Hindus who migrated to India from Pakistan between 1971 and 2009.

    It should be noted that nearly 35,000 Sindhis from Pakistan were living as refugees in M.P. Of these, 15,000 live in Indore and Bhopal.

    The migrants will have to submit forms which will be accepted by the officials at the camp. The application forms will be divided into three categories.

    Those who migrated during 1971-1990 period will have to submit ‘green colour’ form, those who have come to India from the neighbouring country between 1991 and 2000 will have to submit ‘yellow colour’ form, while those from 2000-2009 period will have to furnish ‘white’ colour forms.

  • Biography on Super 30 fame Anand Kumar released

    Chief Minister Nitish Kumar released the  biography of well renowned mathematician and philanthropist Anand Kumar who is best known for his Super 30 programme, which he started in Patna, Bihar in 2002.

    Super 30 provides free coaching, food and accommodation to 30 students coming from the poorest strata of society. Since 2002, over 350 students from the institute have cracked the IIT-JEE.

    The book, titled Super 30: Anand Kumar, is published in English by Penguin Random House and in Hindi by Prabhat Prakashan. It has been written by Canada-based psychiatrist Biju Mathew in association with journalist Arun Kumar.

  • Maldives jails ex-vice president for 10 years

    Maldives jails ex-vice president for 10 yearsFormer Maldives vice-president Ahmed Adeeb was jailed for 10 years on a terrorism charge for possession of firearms. Adeeb faces charges of trying to assassinate Gayoom, after an explosion hit the presidential speedboat last year. Gayoom made his trusted protege Adeeb vice president in July 2015 after sacking his running mate in the 2013 election.

    The decision by the Criminal Court made Ahmed Adeeb the fourth high-profile politician to be jailed on a terrorism charge. Former President Mohamed Nasheed, the former Defence Minister Mohamed Nazim and the head of a leading political party, Sheikh Imran Abdulla, are the others to get lengthy prison terms since President Yameen Abdul Gayoom was elected in 2013. 

    Background : The tiny nation of 340,000 Sunni Muslims has been ruled by Gayoom's half-brother Maumoon Abdul Gayoom from 1978 to 2008 until he lost to Nasheed in the country's first multi-party election. Nasheed resigned in 2012 after weeks of public protests for his role in jailing a sitting judge. He is in UN under political asylum.

  • Tennis star Rohan Bopanna secures direct entry into Rio Olympics

    Indian tennis star Rohan Bopanna has now returned to top-10 in the ATP rankings for doubles chart, securing a direct entry into the men’s doubles event of the Rio Olympic Games.

    Bopanna being a top-10 player not only gets a direct entry but also has the choice to pick his partner for the men’s doubles event irrespective of his ranking.

    The next best players in the doubles for India are Purav Raja (103) Divij Sharan (114), Saketh Myneni (125), Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan (134) and Mahesh Bhupathi (164).

    The ranking of players of June 6 would be considered for entry into the mixed doubles draw, which would be on site from among the players available for singles and doubles.

  • RBI cites inflation risks, keeps policy rate unchanged

    RBI cites inflation risks, keeps policy rate unchangedReserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan kept the benchmark repo rate unchanged at 6.5 percent, in its bank’s bi-monthly monetary policy review. Consequently, the reverse repo rate will remain at 6 percent .

    The cash reserve ratio was also kept unchanged at 4 percent. The GDP growth target for the current fiscal has been retained at 7.6 percent.However the RBI expressed concern over the recent rise in inflation.
