  • Tamil Nadu cancels permission for Coca-Cola's Perundurai plant
    • Hindustan Coca-Cola Beverages Pvt Ltd (HCCBPL) was allotted 71.3 acres of land by SIPCOT to set up a Rs 500-crore bottling plant in 2014 at Perundurai, in Erode district.
    • Local farmers and various civic groups had objected to the plant, on the plea that extraction of water would lead depletion of ground water.
    • The Managing Director of the state owned industries promotion corporation issued an order cancelling permission to the company, after it failed to start construction in the given time frame of six months time.
    • Beverage company Coca-Cola has decided to withdraw its Rs 500-crore investment in Tamil Nadu and has asked the state government to refund money already pumped into the project
  • Supreme Court dismisses petition challenging NGT order of ban on 15 yr old vehicles
    • The Supreme Court dismissed a petition challenging an order passed by the National Green Tribunal (NGT) in November banning petrol vehicles older than 15 years and 10-year-old diesel vehicles from plying on Delhi roads
    • On April 8, it ordered diesel vehicles that are over 10 years old to be taken off the roads in Delhi and its neigbouring states
    • The petitioner, had challenged the green panel's jurisdiction and seeking a stay from the top court on the implementation of the panel's directives
    • The Chief Justice H.L. Dattu said “Let us assist the NGT and not discourage them,” Such a ban regarding pollution control was first imposed by the Andhra Pradesh High Court earlier.
  • Zimbabwe will become first Test nation to visit Pakistan since 2009
    • According to Pakistan Cricket Board, Pakistan is set to host short limited-overs series in may which makes Zimbabwe the first team to visit Pakistan since the 2009 gun attack on the Sri Lanka team bus
    • Foreign teams have refused to tour Pakistan over security fears since 2009 so Pakistan has had to host all its home matches in United Arab Emirates instead
    • Due to security fears Bangladesh refused twice in 2012 to tour Pakistan after initially agreeing for short limited over series
    • Pakistan Cricket Board president Shaharyar Khan said Zimbabwe would be provided with top-level security during the tour.
  • Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu launches E-Samiksha to monitor rail projects online

    Railways on Tuesday launched E-Samiksha an online monitoring mechanism with an aim of monitoring implementation of various ongoing projects including Rail Budget proposals.E-Samiksha will help to monitor every project implementation on real time basis 

    • E-Samiksha has been Designed by National Informatics Centre (NIC) The software is currently being used by Cabinet Secretariat, PMO and other Ministries for monitoring progress implementation of various programmes and follow-up of meetings.
    • Different users such as the PMO/Cabinet Secretariat/Ministries/Departments can securely access the system through a log-in/password
  • ICICI launches 'Tap-n-Pay' in collaboration with Tech Mahindra based on the near-field communications (NFC) technology
    • It will enable customers to make over-the-counter payments without using cash.
    • 'Tap-n-Pay' allows users to just tap the NFC enabled tag or mobile phone at the merchant’s point-of-sale device to make payments.

    What is 'Tap-n-Pay'?

    • Tap n Pay’ is a prepaid account, which can be availed by customers of any bank by simply registering for it and transferring money online from any bank account
    • ICICI Bank customers can also transfer money to the Tap-n-Pay account through an SMS

    How does it work?

    • customers need to have a Mobile Money account if you have the account, you can fund it through various means including netbanking or debit/credit cards
    • After you have recharged your Mobile Money account (minimum of Rs. 100), you can go to the nearest Mobile Money counter and get your tag issued
    • In order to issue the tag, you have to enter your registered mobile number and MPIN in the POS (Point of Sale) machine.
    • You can then start making payments by tapping your NFC tag or then your NFC supported smartphone
  • Three more Tiger Reserves Created

    The census report of January brought good news as there is rise in number of big cat(Tigers) so centre is set to form three new tiger reserves in the country at:- 

    • Ratapani in Madhya Pradesh,
    • Sunabeda in Odisha
    • Guru Ghasidas in Chhattisgarh

    Odisha is among the States where the tiger population has decreased 

    National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) also granted final approval to a proposal to declare Kudremukh National Park in Karnataka and Rajaji National Park in Uttarakhand as tiger reserve
