    Kannada film Thithi wins top award in Shanghai film festivalKannada film "Thithi" has bagged Asia New Talent Awards for best film and best script writer during the on-going 19th Shanghai International Film Festival in China.

    Thithi co-written and directed by Raam Reddy is a light-hearted story about three generations of men reacting to the death of the family's 101-year-old patriarch, named Century Gowda who is a locally renowned, highly cantankerous.

    The film has won numerous other awards at national and international film festivals. 

    Asia New Talent Awards : 

    The Asia New Talent Awards, dedicated to rewarding new- comers to the Asian film industry, began in 2004 as an important competition section in addition to the Golden Goblet Awards.

    Prime Minister Narendra Modi To Attend SCO Summit In TashkentPrime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Tashkent tomorrow to attend the annual summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), a China-dominated six-nation grouping, which is likely to focus on strengthening stability and security in Central Asia.

    This year India, along with Pakistan, is set to be inducted as full members into the bloc which mainly deals with issues relating to security and defence. 

    Advantages for India : Membership of the grouping will help India have a greater say in issues relating to security and defence. With majority of the SCO countries having huge reserves of oil and gas, India is expected to get greater access to major hydrocarbon projects in Central Asia after its entry into the bloc.

    Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)

    SCO was founded at a summit in Shanghai in 2001 by the Presidents of Russia, China, Kyrgyz Republic, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. India, Iran and Pakistan were admitted as observers at the 2005 Astana Summit. On July 10, 2015, the SCO decided to admit India and Pakistan as full members, and they are expected to join by 2016.

    Virginia Raggi became first female mayor of RomeLeading member of the populist anti-corruption Five Star Movement (M5S) of Italy,Virginia Raggi has been elected as Rome's first female mayor.

    In the mayoral election, Raggi won 67% of the vote in a runoff ballot against the Democratic Party’s (PD) Roberto Giachetti.

    M5S has emerged as the main opposition to Renzi's coalition and success in Rome will provide a platform for victory in general elections due in 2018.

    Raggi studied law at the Roma Tre University and holds specialisation  in judicial and extrajudicial civil law. In the 2013 municipal election of Rome, Raggi was one of four members of the M5S elected as councillor to city council.

    Jews in Maharashtra get minority statusThe State Cabinet of Maharashtra has approved the decision to grant minority status to the Jews, a demand pending for many years.

    The decision is based on the Maharashtra State Minorities Commission Act, 2004, which empowers the government to declare a community minority.

    In October 2006, the State government declared Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, Buddhists, Parsis and Jains as religious minorities.

    According to the application made by the Indian Jewish Federation to the government, the Jewish population in the State stood at 2,000-2,500.

    Significance :

    The status will now make the community eligible to avail various development schemes that the state launches for the minority community.

    The community will now get benefits of merit-cum-means scholarship, post-matric scholarship, pre-matric scholarship, coaching and allied schemes and multi-sectoral development programme that the government runs for minorities.

    India ranks 10th in FDI inflows: UNCTAD reportAs per the World Investment Report 2016 by the United Nations Conference for Trade and Development (UNCTAD).  India ranks 10th in FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) inflows.

    India’s FDI inflows have increased to 44 billion dollars in 2015 as compared to 35 billion dollars in 2014.

    Top 10 Countries are: United States, Hong Kong, China, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Singapore, Brazil, Canada and India

    Globally, FDI activity has increased by 38%, which signals revival in investment sentiments.

    United States with 380 billion dollars FDI inflows has topped the list while China with FDI inflows at 136 billion dollars (more than three times India’s FDI)  in 2015 was ranked third.

    Anju Bobby George quits as president of Kerala Sports CouncilIndia’s lone athletics World Championship medal winner Anju Bobby George today resigned as President of the Kerala Sports Council after she accused Sports Minister EP Jayarajan for allegedly harassing her and other members of Kerala Sports Council. 

    Some of the other sports council members, including volleyball player Tom Joseph, are also likely to quit from their posts.

    She was appointed to the top post by the Oommen Chandy government in the year 2015. Anju became the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in a World Athletics Championships in Paris in 2003.

    Anju the winner of Arjuna awards has represented the country in the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games and World Championships from 2002 onwards.

  • ISRO set to test scramjet engine

    ISRO set to test scramjet engineEngineers at Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) are gearing up to test the indigenously developed scramjet engine developed  to power the Reusable Launch Vehicle (RLV).

    The test will be conducted on test platform named Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV) from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota.

    The scramjet engine which uses air breathing propulsion technology for hypersonic flight will be released at a height of 70 km and ignited at hypersonic speed during the coasting.

    Maintaining combustion in supersonic conditions poses technical challenges because the fuel has to be ignited within milliseconds.

    Significance :

    Space research organisations across the world are involved in the development of scramjet technology because it contributes to smaller launch vehicles with more payload capacity and promises cheaper access to outer space.

    Conventional rocket engines need to carry both fuel and oxidiser on board for combustion to produce thrust, scramjets obtain oxygen from the atmosphere by compressing the incoming air before combustion at supersonic speed.

  • Leading Telugu poet Guda Anjaiah passes away 

    Leading Telugu poet Guda Anjaiah passes away Leading Telugu poet and Telangana song writer Guda Anjaiah passed away following a brief illness at Ragannagudem, Telangana. He was 61.

    During the Telangana struggle, he Penned songs that filled enthusiasm amongst activists.Several songs later found their way into films.

    Guda Anjaiah was born in Adilabad district in 1955. Guda Anjanna played a significant role in the Telangana agitation. Starting from 1969 Agitation, he was part of the movement.

    He was the author of novel titled Polimera which highlighted the dark days of 1975 National Emergency.

    He was the winner of various awards as Sahithya Bandu Ratna award (1986), Rajini Telugu Sahithi Samithi Award (1988), Telangana Sahithya Puraskaram (2015).

  • Aadhaar to be linked with caste, domicile certificates

    Aadhaar to be linked with caste, domicile certificatesThe central government has instructed all state governments  to link Aadhaar with caste and domicile certificates to be issued to school students.

    The move is being seen as an effort to help the government disburse scholarships and other caste and domicile-based benefits faster.

    The States have been told to ensure that such certificates are issued within 60 days to the students when they are studying in Class V or VIII.

    The main objective of issuance of caste or tribe certificate is to facilitate access of bona-fide candidates belonging to the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes to the reserved posts and services under the State or Central governments and secure admission in educational institutions and get other facilities.
