'Kamaicha' maestro Sakar khan passes away

Sakar Khan, “Kamaicha” playing Rajasthani folk musician and a Padma shree awardee, passed away at the age of 77 following a glorious career that brought him fame worldover. A native of Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan he belongs to Rajasthan's traditional folk musician community of Manganiyar.

  • performances at major international festivals in France, US, USSR and Japan.
  • last studio recorded album : “At Home: Sakar Khan” (in 2012)
  • Padma Shri in 2012 - for contribution to Indian music

Kamancha/kamaicha, kamaycha, kemancheh - a 8th century instrument, it’s a “bow and string instrument” having a goat skin sound box and 3 main gut strings with 14 sympathetic metal strings

  • It is one of the oldest bowed instruments of the world and is found globally with many regional variations ( eg. In Kashmir, it is known as saaz-i-kashmir and is  likened to Raba'ab- a middle-eastern instrument).
