Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba appointed as Chief of the Naval Staff

Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief (FOC-in-C) of Western Naval Command, has been appointed as the new Chief of Naval Staff.  He will assume the charge on 31 May 2016 and shall have full three-year-term in office till 31 May 2019. He will succeed Admiral RK Dhowan who is retiring from the post on 31 May 2016.

Born on July 17, 1957, Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba  is an alumnus of the National Defense Academy (NDA), Defense Services Staff College, Royal College of Defense Studies and also has a PG in Defense and Management studies. 

He was commissioned on January 01, 1978 into the Executive Branch of Indian Navy. During his long and distinguished service spanning nearly 38 years, he has served in a variety of Command, operational and staff appointments.

Vice Admiral Lanba’s Sea Command includes commanding the minesweeper INS Kakinada, frigate INS Himgiri and Executive Officer of INS Viraat, the aircraft carrier.
He also had held important staff assignments such as Fleet Operations Officer of the Western Fleet and Chief of Staff, Southern and Eastern Naval Commands.

Vice Admiral Sunil Lanba is a qualified specialist in navigation and direction course. He attended the course at the Royal College of Defence Studies, UK. Lanba has also been the Flag Officer Commanding Maharashtra and Gujarat Naval Area, Flag Officer Sea Training, Commandant at National Defence College and Vice Chief of Naval Staff.

Awards and Honours: Vice Admiral Lanba is a recipient of Param Vishist Seva Medal and Ati Vishist Seva Medal in recognition of his distinguished service of an exceptionally high order.
